Oct 22, 2023New playground picnic tables shade may come to Corpus Christi parks
Two of Corpus Christi's popular parks may soon see major upgrades – new playground equipment, picnic tables and shade from South Texas’ sweltering days.
Among the potential new playground features: a sea turtle climber, and a kids’-sized tower.
An early version of the City Council's agenda lays out colorful conceptual renderings of the proposed revamps – soon to be in consideration – for North Beach's Surfside Park and for the bayfront's Cole Park.
Known for their scenic views along the gulf shoreline, the downtown-area parks are favorites for tourists and residents alike.
Here's a breakdown of what's being proposed, as shown in city records – and, if signed-off on by the City Council, may be on their way.
Proposal: Purchasing new play equipment tailored for children between the ages of 5 and 12, and specifically designed to be accessible for children who use a wheelchair or other mobility aids.
What the proposal would include: A new playground unit with a swing set, shade structures, slides, bongos and a sea turtle climber.
Cost: About $362,000
Funding source: Voter-approved Bond 2022 program
Estimated timeline, if approved by the council this month: 10 to 12 weeks for equipment arrival; additional 90 days after city officials formally give the contractor the go-ahead to start construction.
Proposal: Construction contract for new amenities at North Beach's Surfside Park
What the proposal includes: Construction of a parking lot, playground area, picnic tables, and new restrooms. The restrooms are proposed to be built on piers to mitigate frequent area flooding.
Cost: In total, about $6 million.
Funding source: About $1.9 million in state hotel occupancy taxes; funding available through the voter-approved bond 2020 program.
Estimated timeline, if approved by the council this month: April 2024
The documents showing the park proposals are included in an early version of the City Council's agenda, as posted mid-week – however, a revised version is typically issued Friday.
The City Council meeting is Tuesday.
