OROVILLE, Calif. - Southside Oroville Community Center mixed Easter weekend with the grand opening of its new 24-hour childcare center.
The event had fun games and food to show off the childcare center's "STEAM" focused education, which teaches children science, technology, engineering, art and math.
Director of the Southside Oroville Community Center, Pastor Kevin Thompson, told Action News Now, the childcare center is open to everyone, and children of all ages.
"We're so excited about where we're at today because this is from a center that was on the verge of having its doors completely closed to right now we're in the process of opening up our Havenscourt higher learning childcare and Haven's court family resource center," he said.
But they're really hoping to help out parents who work odd hours.
"We want to reach out to our police department, first responders, medical teams that's dealing with these odd hours. Many people they get off work at a later hour than 4:30 and most daycares they close between 4:30 and 5:30," he said.
He told Action News Now they already have 87 people enrolled in their program, and the children will have their own bedding and sleeping cots for overnight care.
Busy mom, Victoria Smith, said she's excited about the new addition to the community center because it'll allow her to focus on her many jobs knowing her toddler is in good care.
"Yes, I'm busy. It'll be able to help me be mobile with my job and my businesses that I do on my own so I'll be able to drop her off and then pick her up and know she's going to be safe," she told Action News Now.
The higher learning center has a "Six C's" they'll be teaching children, as part of their Reggio Emilia-inspired learning environment.

It will also provide kids with three meals a day, with some being made from the fruits and veggies grown in a garden tended by the children, as part of their learning curriculum.
The new childcare center is located at the Southside Oroville Community Center at 2959 Lower Wyandotte Rd.
