Rod Stewart’s former Wave House lists for $49.5M in Malibu

This cresting casa, widely believed to have been an inspiration for the Sydney Opera House, is looking for a new owner.

Designed in the 1950s and intended to look like a giant wave, the oceanfront Malibu property is considered one of the California coastline's more recognizable homes.

Surf's up for anyone looking to live within such inspiration, as the home, called the Wave House, is newly available for $49.5 million, the Wall Street Journal first reported.

"With its unique design and captivating atmosphere, the Wave House stands as a testament to the artistic vision of architect Harry Gesner and its enduring appeal in the real estate market," Dena Luciano, one of the listing reps, told The Post of the property, which Gesner sketched from his surfboard in the water in front of the address. "It is awe-inspiring, while simultaneously evoking a sense of relaxation."

Luciano, together with fellow Douglas Elliman agent Chris Cortazzo, along with Zen Gesner of Compass (Harry's son) and Drew Fenton Carolwood Estates hold the six-bedroom, eight-bathroom listing.

Built for a local lumberyard-owning couple, the home has since been owned by the likes of British rocker Rod Stewart and record executive Mo Ostin, the most recent owner, known for signing such acts as the Kinks and Jimi Hendrix as the leader of Warner Bros. Records.

Ostin passed away last year, aged 95, and his estate is now selling off his home of 36 years, his son Michael Ostin told the Journal.

Under Stewart's ownership, the Wave House saw railings installed along the decks — "He was very concerned that people at his parties would stumble and fall off the edge," co-listing representative Gesner, who grew up next door in a building known as the Sandcastle, told the publication.

During his time as the "Forever Young" singer's neighbor, Zen Gesner recalls periodically seeing Stewart dancing on his deck and once encountering the entire Scottish national team playing soccer on the beach, Stewart having invited them over for a game.

As for the approximately 6,200-square-foot midcentury-modern compound's amenities, there are three vaulted "public rooms" featuring a conversation pit and a central fireplace, a hot tub and a sauna-equipped beach-facing primary suite, according to the listing.

The roof is covered in hand-cut copper shingles meant to resemble fish scales and there's also a separate building, which serves as both a garage and a guest house.
